Our Take on “Stolen Laptop Stored Personal Police Data”

Our Take is contributed by SafeBoot Chief Technology Officer, Simon Hunt
A Houston software company that stores sensitive information had a "break in and theft.” You would think that a company who deals with security would have had a break in - but no theft, or would at least have employed some protection on their laptops, given that they had already noted that they were a company who stored "sensitive information."
Perhaps this is yet another example of top-down apathy which is a common trend amongst data theft stories. Too often are we told that senior management have noted that they have sensitive information, and are at risk for theft, but do nothing to protect against it.
Full disk encryption products are so simple and inexpensive, yet still there seems to be a reluctance to step up to the plate and actually DO something to protect other peoples information. I am sure the names and addresses of 97,000 individuals involved in law enforcement will be very interesting to the criminal fraternity.
